Captain Bryan Quenell is retiring from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office after 31 years of service. Born and raised in Humboldt, Quenell comes from a family with a strong law enforcement background. He joined the police academy in 1994 and worked as a records clerk while training.
Quenell’s career at the Sheriff’s Office began after graduating from the academy in 1995. Over the years, he has held various roles, including Correctional Officer, Resident Deputy in Hoopa, Field Training Officer, and Team Leader for Marijuana Enforcement and Special Services teams. He later served as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Commander of Drug Task Force and SWAT teams.
In 2018, Quenell was promoted to Captain. In this role, he managed Patrol, Special Services, Major Crimes, Coroner’s Office, Animal Control, Neighborhood Watch, and Emergency Communications Center. Despite his accomplishments, Quenell remains humble about his contributions to HSCO.
“I did what I could while I was here and did my best to make it better every step of the way,” said Quenell.
Quenell has no formal plans for retirement yet but is open to future opportunities. “My wife’s convinced that I won’t be able to sit still,” he mentioned.
Sheriff William Honsal acknowledged Quenell’s significant impact on the agency: “We were privileged to have him as part of the HCSO family for so many years.”
