Del Norte County announced on June 2 that it is preparing to update its online presence by adopting an official .gov domain name. The change is being made to comply with federal and state guidelines and aims to provide residents with a secure, verified government website.
The county said a .gov domain reassures the public that they are interacting with an official, trusted government source. Del Norte County is now asking for community feedback to help decide what should precede the “.gov” in its new web address, emphasizing the importance of selecting a name that is easy to say, type, and promote.
According to the county’s announcement, federal rules for .gov domains are regulated by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). These rules require that names clearly identify the county, avoid special characters such as dashes or numbers because they can be hard to remember or pronounce, and exclude confusing acronyms that could be rejected by regulators.
The county highlighted three reasons why community feedback matters: simplicity in finding a compliant name; clarity so visitors immediately recognize Del Norte County; and ensuring that all voices are heard so the website effectively serves everyone. Residents are encouraged to share their suggestions through a designated feedback channel.
“Your voice ensures our website serves everyone effectively,” according to the announcement.
