Between May 19 and May 30, 2025, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office conducted a sex offender registration compliance sweep throughout Humboldt County. The operation was supported by representatives from the Arcata Police Department, Rio Dell Police Department, Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office, and State Parole.

These compliance sweeps aim to ensure that registered sex offenders in Humboldt County are adhering to their registration requirements. According to California Penal Code 290, sex offenders must register in person with the law enforcement agency where they reside. They are also required to update their registration annually and notify law enforcement of any changes to their address or registration information. Failing to do so is a crime that can result in either a felony or misdemeanor charge.

As of June 6, 2025, there are 375 registered sex offenders in Humboldt County; among them, 46 are registered as transient. During the recent sweep, it was found that 317 registrants were compliant with regulations. However, 23 registrants were suspected of being out of compliance; another 28 could not be contacted. Additionally, two offenders were currently incarcerated and four were found deceased. Seven arrests were made during this operation.

The authorities note that those who could not be contacted are not necessarily out of compliance as many may have been at work during the weekday operations. Investigations into non-compliance cases continue and further arrest warrants may be issued by the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office.

This annual sweep is part of a collaborative effort to reduce violent sexual offenses through proactive monitoring and strict enforcement of state registration requirements. The efforts are funded by the SAFE grant under the Region II Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Team.

The public is encouraged to learn more about Megan’s Law—state and federal laws mandating sex offender registration—and access information on registered sex offenders through its website at www.meganslaw.ca.gov. These measures aim to protect communities by making information about registered sex offenders publicly available.
