The Humboldt County Sheriff, William Honsal, has issued a reminder to the public that aerial fireworks are illegal in most areas of Humboldt County. Sheriff Honsal emphasized the potential dangers associated with illegal fireworks during the Fourth of July celebrations.
“Fourth of July is a special time in our community. We are asking citizens to please be responsible. If you set off illegal fireworks, there are many things that could go wrong, including harm to yourself or others, fires, and stress for sensitive people and pets,” said Sheriff Honsal.
The sheriff’s office noted that there is no safe location for launching illegal fireworks within the county. Individuals whose fireworks cause fires will be held accountable for any resulting costs and damages. Additionally, if injuries or fatalities occur due to such activities, individuals may face fines, penalties, or criminal charges.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) aims to promote responsible celebrations during Independence Day while ensuring the safety of families and structures over the holiday weekend. The office encourages residents to consider community welfare before using illegal fireworks.
Residents can opt for “safe and sane” fireworks available from vendors. These include sparklers, fountains, and firecrackers. It is advised to remain aware of surroundings when using these items and take precautions for people, animals, traffic, and dry vegetation. Pets should be secured in quiet spaces as they may experience stress from the noise.
For those interested in viewing aerial displays safely, professional shows will be held in Fortuna on July 3 at Newburg Park; Eureka on July 4 during its Fourth of July festival; and Benbow State Recreation Area on July 4 as well. These events are organized by trained professionals equipped with safety gear alongside fire department personnel on standby.
Sheriff Honsal urged community members to report any dangerous or reckless activities related to fireworks by contacting local law enforcement agencies: “It is everyone’s responsibility to help keep our community safe.” On July 4th itself—given high call volumes—law enforcement will prioritize life-threatening situations; hence it is recommended only calling 911 if there’s an immediate danger posed towards life/property.
