The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) is seeking community feedback on the draft of the updated Humboldt County Multijurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). This plan aims to enhance disaster preparedness and reduce risks from natural hazards in the county. The HMP, originally developed in 2007, is periodically updated to comply with the federal Disaster Mitigation Act and maintain eligibility for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding. The last update occurred in 2019.
The North Coast frequently experiences natural disasters such as winter storms, floods, earthquakes, fires, and landslides. To address these challenges, Humboldt County OES is working with local cities, Tribal governments, municipalities, agencies, and community members to update the hazard mitigation plan.
Community input is vital for creating a plan that addresses public needs. Residents are invited to review the draft plan available online at humboldtgov.org/HazardMitigation until Friday, May 30. Public feedback will be reviewed and incorporated into the final version of the 2025 HMP before it is submitted to FEMA for approval this summer.
For further information on public engagement opportunities regarding the HMP or emergency preparedness tips and resources, residents can email oes@co.humboldt.ca.us or call 707-268-2500.
