The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has released new information about the officer-involved shooting that took place on July 26, 2025, in the 1300 block of Glendale Drive.
The deputies involved in the incident have been identified as Deputy Jonathan Eckert, who has nine years of law enforcement experience; Deputy Cole Kane, with six years of experience; and Deputy Russell Hurley, who also has nine years of experience. All three deputies are currently on paid administrative leave, which follows standard procedure after such incidents.
A forensic autopsy for Jared Randell Nelson, the individual who died during the event, is still pending. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and is being handled by the Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). The sheriff’s office stated that further details will be made public in accordance with California State Law as more information becomes available.
