Jared Huffman, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 2nd district since 2013, has expressed strong opposition to recent actions taken by former President Donald Trump regarding military deployments in California. Huffman, who succeeded Lynn Woolsey and previously served in the California State Assembly from 2006 to 2012, took to social media to voice his concerns.

On June 9, 2025, Huffman stated on Twitter that he “condemn[s] and oppose[s] Trump’s illegal commandeering and deployment of the CA National Guard and his reported deployment of US Marines to Los Angeles.” This statement reflects his disapproval of Trump’s decision involving military forces within the state.

In a subsequent tweet on the same day, Huffman accused Trump of seeking opportunities for increased domestic military involvement. He wrote that “Trump is looking for excuses to deploy the military domestically, shut down political opposition, and cross the Rubicon into dictatorship.” He also urged protestors to maintain peaceful demonstrations to avoid providing justification for further military action.

Continuing his critique on June 10, Huffman described Trump’s actions as both dangerous and unconstitutional. He tweeted that “Trump’s deployment of California National Guard soldiers to the LA streets is not only a reckless power grab – but it also endangers public safety.” He called for Trump to revoke these orders and respect constitutional rights by restoring local control.

Jared Huffman was born in Independence, Missouri in 1964 and currently resides in San Rafael. He graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a BA in 1986 and earned his JD from Boston College in 1990.
