Jared Huffman, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 2nd district since 2013, has recently voiced his concerns over several Republican budget proposals through social media. His statements reflect his opposition to these measures and highlight the potential impacts on various public programs.
On May 13, 2025, Huffman criticized a Republican budget proposal that aims to cut Medicaid and food assistance by $1 trillion. He expressed concern about the removal of essential programs that support millions of Americans. Huffman stated, “Republicans are pushing a budget that cuts Medicaid and food assistance by $1 trillion, ripping away basic needs programs that help millions of Americans.” He further noted that most people cannot afford for this budget to pass and emphasized the Democratic Party’s commitment to using every available tool to prevent it.
The following day, on May 14, Huffman addressed another issue related to the GOP’s Ways and Means reconciliation package. This package proposes $10 billion in tax credits for private and religious schools. Huffman described this as “another giveaway to the wealthy and another Trump attack on the separation of church and state.” He reiterated his stance on employing all possible means to counteract this measure.
Later on May 14, Huffman commented on proposed Republican cuts exceeding billions in funding for climate and clean energy programs. These reductions also target critical health programs according to Huffman’s assessment. He argued that such actions effectively promote fossil fuel infrastructure development. He remarked “Republicans are cutting over billions in funding for climate and clean energy programs that benefit American households.”
Jared Huffman was born in Independence, Missouri in 1964 but currently resides in San Rafael. An alumnus of the University of California, Santa Barbara with a BA degree earned in 1986, he later acquired his JD from Boston College in 1990.
