As the weather warms, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has issued a reminder about the dangers of fast-moving and cold rivers, particularly focusing on the Trinity River. The office emphasizes that despite rising air temperatures, river conditions remain perilous due to snowmelt and spring runoff. These factors have resulted in swift, high, and extremely cold waters that can be dangerous even for experienced swimmers.
The Sheriff’s Office highlights that cold water can cause muscles to seize up, making swimming difficult or impossible. A few seconds in such conditions could lead to tragedy.
The Boating Safety and Swift Water Rescue Team from the Sheriff’s Office advises taking several precautions when near or on water. They recommend always wearing a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket during activities like boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, or swimming. It is also advised never to leave children unattended near rivers or creeks and ensure they wear life jackets.
Additionally, avoiding alcohol and drugs during water activities is crucial as these substances impair judgment and reaction time. People are warned not to underestimate river currents since even strong swimmers can be swept away quickly by moving water.
Staying informed about river conditions and obeying all posted warning signs and closures is essential for safety. The office notes that emergency services might be limited in remote areas along rivers, which could delay response times.
The Sheriff’s Office urges everyone to prioritize safety around waterways this season to prevent accidents. Subscriptions for news alerts from HCSO are available at humboldtsheriff.org/subscribe.
