On June 30, 2025, deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded to a report of a gunshot victim on Kneeland Road in Kneeland. The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m.
Upon arrival, authorities found that Ashley Nicole Bartels, 37, from Arcata had discharged a firearm at an unpermitted marijuana cultivation site. The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation led deputies to determine that Bartels fired the weapon in a willful and grossly negligent manner. She was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of Assault with a Firearm (PC 245(a)(2)) and Negligent Discharge of a Firearm (PC 246.3(a)).
