On March 22, 2024, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal declared a Local Emergency in response to the escalating threat posed by the Fleener Creek/Centerville landslide near Ferndale. The ongoing landslides, which have been intensifying since January, now jeopardize the primary access route to various residences, ranches, and recreational areas under the management of the Bureau of Land Management.
In light of the imminent danger to Humboldt County residents, Sheriff Honsal emphasized the necessity for immediate protective measures to safeguard travel routes and restrict access to hazardous zones.
