Two Humboldt County correctional deputies, Correctional Deputy Love and Correctional Deputy Sutherland, along with their training officer Corporal Freese, were hailed as heroes after saving an inmate's life at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.

The incident took place on March 26, 2024, during dinner service when Deputy Love noticed an inmate in the male housing unit choking. Without hesitation, Deputy Love immediately sprang into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver on the choking inmate. Deputy Love's quick thinking prompted a call for backup, and Correctional Deputy Sutherland swiftly responded to assist in the life-saving efforts.

Together, the deputies successfully dislodged the obstruction from the inmate's airway, preventing a potentially tragic outcome. Correctional Deputy Love emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "If not for the job diligence and swift actions of Deputy Love and all the responding staff this situation could have had a fatal outcome."

In light of their heroic actions, Correctional Deputy Sutherland highlighted the significance of their work, noting, "These efforts embody the Sheriff’s Office mission of protecting and serving our community."

The collaborative efforts of Correctional Deputy Love, Correctional Deputy Sutherland, and Corporal Freese exemplify the dedication and commitment of the Sheriff's Office to ensuring the safety and well-being of both inmates and staff within the correctional facility.
