The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office has released an update regarding the officer-involved shooting that took place on April 25, 2024, in the Cutten area of Eureka. The deputy involved in the incident is Lieutenant Conan Moore, a law enforcement veteran with over fifteen years of service with the Sheriff’s Office. Currently, Lieutenant Moore remains on paid leave.
Two days after the incident, on April 27, 2024, suspect Kevin Jeffrey Burks (DOB 06/30/1991) succumbed to his injuries. A forensic autopsy revealed that Burks' immediate cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.
Following the incident, a 75-year-old female victim was immediately transported to a hospital outside of the area for treatment. She has since been discharged and is currently under continued care at a rehabilitation facility.
The case remains under investigation by the Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with information about this case or related criminal activity to call their office at (707) 445-7251 or their Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.
