On January 12, a deputy from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a vehicle in Samoa for failing to yield at a stop sign and having expired registration. The driver, identified as Marcus Wade Smith, 34, of Fortuna, did not comply and accelerated through an intersection on New Navy Base Road and Cookhouse Road without stopping.
Smith continued driving northbound on Highway 255 at speeds between 60-85 mph in a zone where the speed limit is 55 mph. The deputy pursued Smith with emergency lights and siren activated. The pursuit ended after approximately 3.8 miles when Smith stopped at the Mad River Slough Bridge. He was detained without further incident.
The Emergency Communications Dispatch Center confirmed that Smith had an outstanding felony warrant and was on felony probation. During the arrest, deputies found multiple credit cards and identification cards belonging to other individuals.
Smith was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of flight from a traffic officer under VC 2800.1(a) and violation of probation under PC 1203.2(a)(2).
