The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services (OES) is working with 25 local jurisdictions to update the Humboldt County Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). The office is seeking input from the community to inform this process.
The plan, first developed in 2007, aims to reduce risks from natural disasters and ensure compliance with the federal Disaster Mitigation Act. This will help maintain eligibility for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding. The last update was completed in 2019, and the new plan will continue efforts by outlining resources and strategies for disaster preparedness.
Humboldt County frequently experiences natural disasters such as winter storms, floods, earthquakes, fires, and landslides. To create a relevant hazard mitigation plan, the OES is collaborating with local cities, tribal governments, municipalities, agencies, and community members.
Community members are invited to participate by completing the Humboldt County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan Survey. Residents can share their priorities to help identify solutions that align with public needs. The survey is available online at humboldtgov.org/HazardMitigation until Monday, March 24 at 8 p.m., takes about 15 minutes to complete, and responses will remain confidential.
Survey results will be reviewed and incorporated into the 2025 LHMP. The updated plan is expected to be submitted to FEMA for approval in summer 2025.
