Fortuna issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.

In a small private ceremony, attended by a handful of invited guests including her family, Fortuna Police School Resource Officer Lindsey Beuchaine received an award on Wednesday afternoon from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2207 in recognition of her “dedicated community service”. Lt. Matt Eberhardt who is Lindsey’s immediate supervisor explained that he nominated her for the recognition because of her “exemplary service… which “has made a positive impact that extends well beyond our own community.”

Eberhardt went on to explain that throughout the current pandemic, she has maintained a connection with our youth, letting them know that they are not alone, that they are valued and giving them hope and things to look forward to.

He added, “Lindsey organized and partnered with schools, parent groups, local businesses and more to conduct projects at Fortuna and other County Schools.

One of these projects was at Walker Elementary School, where Lindsey organized the repainting of the school’s playground map. Lindsey organized volunteers, obtained the paint and the refurbished map now provides an outside learning tool for students with removable state labels that can be utilized as a learning tool.

At Hydesville Elementary School, Lindsey worked with the Hydesville Elementary Parent Group to restore their playground to show the students that we care about them and their education. During this project basketball hoops were refurbished, and the playground games and map were repainted. Eberhardt says that Lindsey is continually approaching her supervisors with projects and ideas on how to engage and make a positive difference. A great credit to her is that she does many of these projects on her off duty time, and sometimes at her own expense, or with private community donations.

Police Chief Casey Day said of Lindsey that she “embodies sincerity, selflessness, compassion, and community.”

He added, “I am extremely proud of her devotion to serve and sincerely view her as a beacon of hope for our community and for our youth.”

The award was presented to Lindsay by Martin Morris who serves as Junior Vice and Post Adjutant of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2207 in Fortuna.

The ceremony was kept secret from Officer Beuchaine until the minute that she arrived. Lindsey who was wearing a face mask said, “I know that it doesn’t look like it but I am smiling,” expressing her surprise and appreciation for the award. Lindsey has been a police officer with the City of Fortuna since 2013 and has served as the Police Department's School Resource Officer since 2017.
