On February 4, 2024, at 9:36 p.m., Correctional Deputy David Reed was performing a routine cell check in the female maximum-security wing. While conducting the check, Deputy Reed noticed a 41-year-old female was attempting to hang herself. Deputy Reed immediately called for back-up and entered the cell along with Corporal David Swim. These deputies were able to remove the hanging device from her airway, which allowed the female to immediately begin to breath. The deputies stabilized the female, and she received emergency medical assistance on scene. She was later seen by mental health professionals to ensure her continued safety both short and long term at the correctional facility.
The Humboldt County Correctional Facility commended the actions of the deputies, stating, "The diligence and swift actions of Deputy Reed, Corporal Swim, and all the responding staff embody the Sheriff’s Office mission of protecting and serving our community."
