The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services (OES) is urging the community to take part in International ShakeOut Day on October 17. This global event, recognized as the largest earthquake drill worldwide, will see millions practicing earthquake safety at 10:17 a.m.
Participants are encouraged to follow the recommended safety actions: "drop, cover, and hold on." This involves dropping onto hands and knees to avoid being knocked down, covering the head and neck with one arm and hand, and holding on until the shaking stops. The instructions vary slightly for those using canes, walkers, or wheelchairs to ensure everyone's safety.
Individuals and organizations are invited to register their participation at ShakeOut.org/register. Community preparedness is emphasized as vital for mitigating earthquake impacts. Resources like Living on Shaky Ground from the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group provide insights into why California's North Coast experiences frequent seismic activity.
During ShakeOut Day, Humboldt County OES will test its emergency notification system, Humboldt Alert. Residents are encouraged to register for alerts at humboldtgov.org/alerts ahead of this test.
Additionally, OES is collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies for a training exercise simulating communication scenarios during a major earthquake. Volunteers can participate as radio operators or members of emergency response teams by completing the ShakeOut Volunteer Signup form.
