The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services (OES) is advising residents to stay prepared for ongoing storm impacts throughout the week. The county has already faced challenges, including power outages, fallen trees, and minor road disruptions. As the storm continues, OES will monitor conditions in collaboration with local agencies.
The Emergency Operation Center (EOC) has been activated to provide public information and assess the situation related to the storm. The Weather Service forecasts additional rain, prompting the Sheriff's Office to urge community readiness for possible effects.
Residents should be aware that more rain may lead to downed trees, minor flooding in low-lying areas, creeks and streams, power outages, and potential road blockages. Generators can offer backup during power outages but must be used safely to avoid risks like carbon monoxide poisoning. Safety guidelines include:
- Never run generators indoors.
- Place them at least 20 feet from windows and doors.
- Refuel only when cool; spilled fuel on a hot engine can ignite.
- Install CO detectors on every home level.
- Keep generators dry and use heavy-duty extension cords.
If encountering a downed power line, call 9-1-1 immediately followed by PG&E at 1-800-743-5002. Stay at least 35 feet away and consider all lines live and dangerous.
