On November 3, deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) responded to a tip about a possible sighting of Joseph LaRue, a wanted fugitive, near Fortuna. The HCSO coordinated with the Fortuna Police Department (FPD) to apprehend LaRue, who had previously evaded law enforcement twice.

LaRue faced charges including domestic violence, resisting arrest, child endangerment, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and making threats to commit crimes resulting in death or injury. When confronted by law enforcement, LaRue attempted to escape through the back of a residence and neighboring yard. A PepperBall was used as a non-lethal compliance tool to assist in his capture. During his arrest, more than 5 grams of methamphetamine were found on him.

Further investigation revealed that LaRue and Katina Baker were in possession of a stolen vehicle containing additional stolen property, including 12 firearms. LaRue was taken to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on multiple charges: possession of methamphetamine while armed, felon in possession of firearms, possession of stolen vehicle and property, possession of ammunition by a felon, resisting arrest, and possession of methamphetamine. Baker was cited for possession of a stolen vehicle and released at the scene.

The HCSO expressed gratitude to the public and assisting agencies such as the Fortuna Police Department, Cal FIRE, and California Highway Patrol for their help in capturing the fugitive. The case remains under investigation. Individuals with information are encouraged to contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office or its Crime Tip line.
